Update on the Avenue A Pedestrian Ramp Project: Where Things Stand and What’s Next
Last week, I met directly with Los Angeles County staff to get a detailed status update on the Avenue A Pedestrian Ramp project. While the official schedule has not yet changed, the County has committed to exploring ways to accelerate the process where possible.
This project must move through both the California Coastal Commission and the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) process. That combined review can take up to 18 months. The good news is that the Coastal Commission has already reviewed the project, and changes have been made in response to their feedback. Because of that early coordination, the County expects the remaining review process to be relatively smooth.
One factor contributing to delays is the existing facility at the base of the ramp. Some work was previously completed without permits, and the Coastal Commission has required the County to resolve and correct those permitting issues before the project can move forward. While frustrating, this cleanup is necessary to ensure the project is fully compliant and to avoid larger delays or legal challenges later.
What Happens Next
Once the environmental and coastal approvals are finalized, the project proceeds through several required steps:
- Plan Check
Currently estimated at approximately six months. The County has indicated they will look for opportunities to expedite this phase if possible. - Board of Supervisors Approval
After plan check, the project must be approved by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. - Bidding and Construction
Following approval, the project goes out to bid and then into construction. This phase could take up to 18 months.
Current Estimated Timeline
Based on the most recent information provided by County staff, the working timeline is:
- Entitlements: Spring 2026
- Plan Check: Summer 2026
- Bidding: Winter 2026
- Construction: 2027–2028
In addition, the County has committed to updating its project webpage to clearly reflect what has already been accomplished and to post any future schedule updates as they occur. That transparency is important, and I will be monitoring those updates closely.
While this process is moving more slowly than anyone would prefer, there is meaningful progress happening behind the scenes. I will continue advocating for acceleration wherever feasible and will keep our community informed as new milestones are reached.
